NEWARA Field Day

Date: June 27 - June 28, 2026
Location(s):
Field Day is ham radio's open house. Every June, more than 31,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's science, skill and service to our communities and our nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933, and remains the most popular event in ham radio. We welcome the public to come learn more about ham radio!

Northeast Wyoming Amateur Radio Association will have a "GOTA" station on-site at CAM-PLEX, short for "Get On The Air," and it provides an opportunity for non-hams to sit down behind a ham radio (under the guidance of a licensed amateur operator who will be right there at your elbow since it's his license you'll technically be using), and talk on the radio with other amateur radio stations across the country. For many, it's their first taste of "getting on the air."

This is in addition to at least two other radio stations that club members will be operating at the same time on-site.

Because Field Day is an "emergency preparedness" opportunity for amateur radio operators, the rules state for the most "points" you must operate "off-grid" for the event...so ham radio stations will be running off of generators, solar/batteries, batteries, wind power, and some near water will be using water driven generators at their sites.

The objective is to contact as many stations as possible on the 160-, 80-, 40-, 20-,15- and 10-Meter HF bands, as well as all bands 50 MHz and above, and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions.

Field Day will start at 12 noon on Saturday, and run for 24 hours to 12 noon Sunday. (The time is different in each time zone, so the East Coast will start at 2 p.m. Sat and run to 2 p.m. their time, etc.)

What is Amateur Radio?

Often called “ham radio,” the Amateur Radio Service is a worldwide community of licensed operators using the airwaves with every conceivable means of communications technology. It is made up of people who enjoy learning and being able to transmit voice, data, and pictures through the airwaves to places near and far without depending on commercial systems. The amateur radio frequencies are the last remaining place in the usable radio spectrum where an individual can develop and experiment with wireless communications. Not only can hams build and modify their equipment, but they can also create new ways to communicate via the airwaves — and do it as a globally connected community. Many people in the hobby form lifelong friendships with people they wouldn’t have otherwise met. Many rock stars, Hollywood actors, and heads of state (and even your neighbor down the street) are ham radio operators. You can be, too! Get started at ARRL Field Day!

Saturday afternoon, Campbell County's Mobile Command Unit will be on-site, providing an indoors room for people taking their amateur radio license exams. The MCU also is equipped with Amateur Radio equipment and can be used as a transmitting/receiving site as needed.
